I was the Angel

I was the Angel

She lay there sleeping
While dust enveloped her face
In an open grave
Surrounded by the ravens
Who chanted a solemn dirge
And I stood silent
So lost in deep solicitude
Unable to move
Even as they flew away
I did not follow
But remained vigilant
She opened her weary eyes
And climbed the ladder
I lifted my head
To meet her beautiful gaze
For I was the angel
Who would escort her onward
Far past suffering and death
