Hunter’s Moon Rising

When she arose

The fullness of my longing

Broke free from its restraints

And I emptied the contents of my heart

Searching the heavens for an answer

The moon bore witness to my pain

Yet lent her light to ease the shame

Of so much sorrow

A Love Song that We Knew

I just heard a serenade

a love song that we knew

And oh my god it wounded me

my heart was torn in two

I know that if you listened

to that same melody

it would take you back

to a place so real

like it just did with me

I hope you never hear it

because I want you to forget

everything I struggle to

Please don’t say you haven’t yet

It’s so painful to remember

that special yesterday

when the love that you still carry

is miles and miles away

and you can’t feel the beating

of that lover’s heart

beneath the beating of your own

and you feel so torn apart

But if by chance you hear it

I hope she’s there with you

and that you’re not alone like me

with no one to cling to

Oh god whoever wrote that song

just crushed this woman’s heart

in the center of their hand

with their unwitting art

by painting such a picture

a scene from my own play

How could they know my private life

in every single way

I’m sorry that I’ve told you

But who else could I tell

I knew that you would understand

because you know me oh so well

Saint Valentine’s Day

Sincere affection

Given from the heart

Void of pretense

For legend set apart

This special day

As an offering

To honor Love

And the birth of Spring

Fathomless

Words cannot express
The yearning of a spirit
Drowning in the depths
Of a heart’s deepest sorrow
No never can you fathom

Now That You’re Gone

One last time I flail away

For fragments of my heart

Trying to inhale the wind

From storm clouds you impart

You are an old photograph

That I haphazardly place

Into a brand-new frame

That doesn’t fit your face

All of the king’s horses

And all the queen’s men

Will never put anything

Back together again

Now that you’re gone

I’m surprised that I feel

Such horrendous pain

That is incredibly real

It has woken me up

From a counterfeit dream

Self-inflicted it seems

And it seems so insane

After all your neglect

And your inadequacy

I still carry your love

Somewhere inside me

That is deeper than death

And far past the grave

It appears I’m a fool

That no man can save

A Beggar’s Cup

How gentle is this soul

Who waits before your door

Who kneels in quiet urgency

Pleading for one drop

To quench the desperation

Of a thirsty land

Longing for a glimpse

Of the Beloved

My Confession

I want to be your number one

Not the one who’s come undone

Because you chose another one

Before me

I want to be your Valentine

I want to hear that you are mine

With the assurance at that time

That you will always be

Exclusively for me

Because I wrote your name in red

Inside my heart and in my head

For time and time again I’ve said

That you belong to me

Zopheil

angel

I paused to tend my wounded spirit
At the end of a broken heart
Empty of expectation
Then I felt your presence
Shining before me
Oh sweet angel
Of my dreams
You have
Come

The Breath of Soul

the-breath-of-soul

And when I’m dead
And when I’m gone
Will you the strength
To carry on
Without me
Take all your hopes
And all your dreams
I am the thread
Inside the seams
Of aspiration
I will be there
In all you do
I am the light
Inside of you
Within your heart
And in your mind
Walking the floors
That seem to wind
Around forever
In all the years
And all the days
That we have shared
So many ways
The joy the tears
The sweet the sour
The breath of soul
Within an hour
That lasts forever

First Love

first-love

Redolent of leather
And amaretto merged together
On an evening filled with rain
The musk and the refrain
Of Chicago filled the air
The faded jeans you used to wear
As I tousled your dark hair
And kissed the warmth of you
Falling onto your bare chest
While you told me all the best
Of your intentions
All my life I’ll recognize
The moment I first saw your eyes
Meeting my astonished gaze
That day you set my heart ablaze
We were so in awe with feeling
With no idea that we were dealing
With a love that would not die
No matter how much we both tried
To finish our first chapter
Because the first lives on long after
We let go
